Description

Silicon Carbide Powder is a perfect tool for flattening and lapping synthetic and natural stones. Choose one of 5 available grit: F80, F120, F280, F500 and F1000. One bottle contains up to 100 gram of SiC powder.

F80
Flattening of very coarse stones (60 - 150 grit)

F120
Flattening of any stones (180 grit and above)

F280
Lapping of medium waterstones (400 - 1000 grit)

F500
Lapping of fine waterstones (2000 grit and above), natural stones, alumina ceramic

F1000
Lapping and honing of ultra-fine natural stones and sintered alumina ceramic

How to use

Warning! Respirator required to work with F1000 silicon carbide powder. Inhalation can cause illness.

The SiC powder should always be coarser than a sharpening stone.

Take a slate pencil and put crosshatch pattern to the surface of the stone. Never skip this step. Your goal is to get rid of crosshatch completely. If you notice left-over of pattern somewhere, it means geometry is not flat yet.

Always add water to make a suspension, not dry SiC. Try to use glass area evenly. Your glass will wear over time because SiC affects glass too.

For hard stones, coarse SiC will be the major time consumer. When SiC disintegrates, put another pinch (refresh). If there is too much suspension, clean your glass. Use a straight edge or metal ruler to check flatness. If you are not sure, make crosshatch pattern again.

The abrasive hygiene should be a priority. Don't let single coarse particle to remain in fine lapping.

The 120 grit SIC powder is very useful and I'm glad i bought 2 containers of it. I opened up my stones quickly and effectively. As this was the first time I have used SIC POWDER it was easy to use and complete the task at hand. If you are thinking about getting this and you need to open up or refresh your stones, a few minutes and your are good to go. I wish Gritomatic had had the 80 grit SIC powder as that was whst I really needed to do 1 stone opened up. I bought that from Hapstone in Ukraine and used it on the stone and had great success with it Thanks Gritomatic, it's nice to know that you are there when parts like these are needed and cannot be had anywhere but from a out of country supplier.

Received my order of 400 and 600 grit silicone powder. Took one of my 11x14 new pieces of glass and proceeded to grind away. Had to do several grinds after washing to see what areas didn't quite get frosted. Then did the 600 several times, cut the corners, installed it in my 11x14 Deardorff, and it was twice to three times as clear and extremely sharp over my stock glass that came from the factory decades ago. Will do 8x10 next and finally will do a back-up for my 12x20 view camera. I can recommend this powder a 10+ for anyone needing to make a replacement ground glass for their camera of any size.

I don't have anything to compare it to because it's my first lapping powder, but it's powder, seems like the grit labeled and performed about how I expected. I used it to lap metallic bonded cbn stones and I wish it broke down slower and cut faster but that's the nature of silicone carbide and if it were tougher it might wear down the cbn you're trying to expose. You can buy SiC powder for rock tumblers that's a better value and I'm sure it's nowhere near the consistent grain size of this purpose made product.

I don't have anything to compare it to because it's my first lapping powder, but it's powder, seems like the grit labeled and performed about how I expected. I used it to lap metallic bonded cbn stones and I wish it broke down slower and cut faster but that's the nature of silicone carbide and if it were tougher it might wear down the cbn you're trying to expose. You can buy SiC powder for rock tumblers that's a better value and I'm sure it's nowhere near the consistent grain size of this purpose made product.
